September 1960
 1. Early in September 1960, after the long summer holidays, I went back to Church Road County Primary School, and into the top class, Class 1.
In fact, the transition from Class 2 to Class 1 is not a memorable one for me, because we were in the same classroom and had the same teacher, Mr. Robinson (or “Pop” Robinson, as we referred to him among ourselves). For Mr. Bastide, who had taught Class 1, left the school at the end of the 1959–1960 academic year, and Mr. Robinson taught Class 1 in his place.

 2. My chief recollections from Class 1 are: the “eleven plus”, a brief friendship with a lad called Alan Holt, swimming lessons at Beechwood School, and a camping holiday with the school in the Peak District.

2B. In the first school term we trooped out of the classroom into the infants’ playground, where we had a class photograph taken, with our backs to the cloakroom of the old school building. On Friday 14th October 1960 it was printed on page 3 of the local weekly newspaper, the Thornton Cleveleys Times.
I also have a copy of the photo, date-stamped on the back “27 OCT 1960”.

 3. As in every year but one at Church Road, I came top of the class, but this year I received a slightly more expensive first prize than usual: a copy of the recently published New Testament of The New English Bible. On the flyleaf is stuck a label rather in the style of an illuminated manuscript, with a border of red roses and blue coiled stems and green leaves, and ornately inscribed:
Church Road
County Primary
School
Awarded to
John
  Cooper
1st Prize

I think the calligrapher was Mr. Robinson himself, for I seem to remember that he could do this kind of fancy writing.
