Family History (list)

Entries in Isaac Osborne’s Bible, and information in the other documents that I have seen, supplemented with information from the Merriott Families Genealogy website (census and parish records), give us the following sequence of events:


Ca.
1814, or ca. 1818 or 1819: Isaac Osborne born

According to the 1851 Census, Isaac Osborne was 33, and according to the 1861, he was 42, so he was born ca. 1818 or 1819. But according to the Merriott Parish burial record, he was 64 when he was buried on 12 June 1878, so that would make it ca. 1814. He lived in Lower Street, Merriott (1851), later in Broadway, Merriott (1861); and his occupation was “tranter” (1851) or “carrier” (1861).

Sunday 4 September 1825: Susan Osborne (Sr.) born
Susan was born on 4 September 1825, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible. She was Isaac Osborne’s wife (1861 Census). The 1851 Census, though, records his wife as Elizabeth.

Ca. 1827: Elizabeth Osborne born
According to the 1851 Census, Isaac Osborne was married to Elizabeth Osborne, age 24, so she was born ca. 1827. No occupation is given for her, apart from “wife”. They had a two-year-old daughter Mary-ann.

Friday 13 July 1849: Mary-ann Osborne born
Mary-ann Osborne was born on 13 July 1849, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible.

Sunday 7 October 1849: Mary-ann Osborne baptised
Mary-ann Osborne was baptised on 7 October 1849, according to the Merriott Parish record. Her mother in the 1851 Census is listed as Elizabeth Osborne, but in the record of baptisms the mother of all ten children is shown as Susan Osborne.

Tuesday 11 November 1851 or Thursday 11 November 1852: John Osborne born
According to Isaac Osborne’s Bible John Osborne was born on 11 November 1852, though according to the Merriott Parish record he was baptised on 7 December 1851, so perhaps he was born on 11 November 1851.

Sunday 7 December 1851 or Tuesday 7 December 1852: John Osborne baptised
John Osborne was baptised, according to the Merriott Parish record, on 7 December 1851. His date of birth, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible, though, was 11 November 1852.

Thursday 13 October 1853 or Friday 13 October 1854: Sarah Osborne born
Sarah Osborne was born on 13 October 1854, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible. But according to the Merriott Parish record, the baptism was on 5 November 1853.

Saturday 5 November 1853 or Sunday 5 November 1854: Sarah Osborne baptised
Sarah Osborne was baptised on 5 November 1853, according to the Merriott Parish record. But the date of birth according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible was 13 October 1854.

Friday 17 August 1855 or Sunday 17 August 1856: Emmer [sic] Osborne born
According to Isaac Osborne’s Bible, “Emmer Osborne” was born on 17 August 1856, but according to the Merriott Parish record “Emily Osborne” was baptised on 9 September 1855.

Sunday 9 September 1855 or Tuesday 9 September 1856: Emily Osborne baptised
“Emily” Osborne (named “Emmer” in Isaac Osborne’s Bible) was baptised on 9 September 1855, according to the Merriott Parish record. According to Isaac Osborne’s Bible, though, she was born on 17 August 1856.

Friday 19 March 1858: Alexander Osborne born
Alexander Osborne was born on 19 March 1858, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible. He was my great-grandfather.

Sunday 11 April 1858: Alexander Osborne baptised
Alexander Osborne was baptised on 11 April 1858, according to the Merriott Parish record.

Thursday 11 October 1860: Elizabeth Osborne born
Elizabeth Osborne was born on 11 October 1860, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible.

Monday 17 December 1860: Elizabeth Osborne baptised
Elizabeth Osborne was baptised on 17 December 1860, according to the Merriott Parish record.

Thursday 14 August 1862: Hannah Osborne born
Hannah Osborne was born on 14 August 1862, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible.

Saturday 13 September 1862: Hannah Osborne baptised
Hannah Osborne was baptised on 13 September 1862, according to the Merriott Parish record.

Sunday 12 June 1864: Ellen Osborne born
Ellen Osborne was born on 12 June 1864, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible.

Sunday 14 August 1864: Ellen Osborne baptised
Ellen Osborne was baptised on 14 August 1864, according to the Merriott Parish record.

Thursday 12 April 1866 or Friday 12 April 1867: Susan Osborne (Jr.) born
Susan Osborne was born on 12 April 1866, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible. But according to the Merriott Parish record, she was not baptised till 9 June 1867; so perhaps she was actually born on 12 April 1867.

Sunday 9 June 1867: Susan Osborne (Jr.) baptised
Susan Osborne was baptised on 9 June 1867, according to the Merriott Parish record. But according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible she was born the previous year: 12 April 1866.

Sunday 27 September 1868: Lewisa Osborne born
Lewisa [sic] Osborne was born on 27 September 1868, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible.

Tuesday 10 November 1868: Louisa Osborne baptised
Louisa Osborne was baptised on 10 November 1868, according to the Merriott Parish record.

Monday 10 June 1872: Sarah Osborne died
Sarah Osborne died on 10 June 1872, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible.

Saturday 15 June 1872: Sarah Osborne buried
Sarah Osborne was buried on 15 June 1872, according to the Merriott Parish record.

Monday 13 November 1876: Alexander Osborne enlisted in the Coldstream Guards
According to his Parchment Certificate of Discharge, Alexander Osborne:
Enlisted at Crewkerne on 13 Nov /76 for Cold Guards at the age of 18¹⁰⁄₁₂ years
i.e. 18 years 10 months. But going by his date of birth according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible, with which his date of baptism is in accord, he was just shy of 18 years 8 months. Cf. the Enrolment Certificate in First Class Army Reserve. By the two army documents I gather that his active Army Service was from 13 November 1876 to 22 February 1883 (“6 years 100 days”, according to the Parchment Certificate, though I reckon it to be 6 years 102 days), and his time in the Army Reserve was from 23 February 1883 to 14 November 1888 (“5 years 265 days”).

Thursday 8 March 1877: Joseph Osborne died
Joseph Osborne died on 8 March 1877, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible. Who was Joseph Osborne? Isaac’s brother, perhaps?

Friday 7 June 1878, Isaac Osborne died
Isaac Osborne died on 7 June 1878, according to “his Book, Blessed Bible”.

Wednesday 12 June 1878: Isaac Osborne buried
Isaac Osborne was buried, according to the Merriott parish register, on 12 June 1878 at the age of 64 (59 or 60, calculating from to Census records).

Thursday 4 September 1879: Mary-ann Osborne married Richard Greenham
Mary-ann Osborne married Richard Greenham on 4 September 1879, according to the Merriott parish record. Judging by the spelling of the surname in Isaac Osborne’s Bible, the name was pronounced “Grenham”.

Thursday 22 February 1883: Alexander Osborne completed his Army Service
According to his Parchment Certificate of Discharge, signed on 22 February 1883, Alexander Osborne was
passed to the Army Reserve in consequence of the completion of his army Service.
Cf. the Enrolment Certificate in First Class Army Reserve. By these two documents I gather that his active Army Service was from 13 November 1876 to 22 February 1883 (“6 years 100 days”, according to the Parchment Certificate, though I reckon it to be 6 years 102 days), and his time in the Army Reserve was from 23 February 1883 to 14 November 1888 (“5 years 265 days”).

Friday 23 February 1883: Alexander Osborne transferred to the Army Reserve
According to the Enrolment Certificate in First Class Army Reserve, signed on 23 February 1883, Alexander Osborne was
transferred to the Army Reserve at Taunton on the 23rd day of February 1883.
Cf. the Parchment Certificate of Discharge. By these two documents I gather that his active Army Service was from 13 November 1876 to 22 February 1883 (“6 years 100 days”, according to the Parchment Certificate, though I reckon it to be 6 years 102 days), and his time in the Army Reserve was from 23 February 1883 to 14 November 1888 (“5 years 265 days”).

Friday 2 March 1883: Mary-ann “Grenham” died
Mary-ann “Grenham” died on 2 March 1883, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible.

Thursday 8 March 1883: Mary Ann Greenham buried
Mary Ann Greenham was buried on 8 March 1883, according to the Merriott Parish record.

Tuesday 5 August 1884: Samuel John Cassius born
Samuel John Cassius was born on 5 August 1884, according to Isaac Osborne’s Bible; to whom, is not indicated.

Saturday 4 October 1884: Alexander Osborne married Elizabeth Bartlett
Alexander Osborne married Elizabeth Bartlett on 4 October 1884, according to the Marriage Certificate; they lived at 30 Harold Street, which is near Roath, Cardiff, Wales.

Friday 25 March 1887: Herbert Cooper born
My paternal grandfather Herbert Cooper was born on 25 March 1887, according to his birth certificate, at 171 Granville Street, Sheffield.

Alexander Osborne was one of the foremen on the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal

—according to my Dad, conversation, August 1989. According to the “Final Description” on Alexander Osborne’s Parchment Certificate of Discharge, dated 14th November 1888, his “intended place of residence” was “1 Cheek Street, Ordsall Lane, Salford, Manchester.” The Manchester Ship Canal was constructed between 1887 and 1893. The 1901 Census information is consistent with Alexander Osborne’s being in Manchester for at least part of that period. For according to it, his son Charles, 13, was born in Bristol (ca.1888); his children Elizabeth, 11, and Henry, 9, were born in Manchester (ca.1890–1892); and his daughter “Lucy” (Louisa, my paternal grandmother), 7, was born in Sheffield (4 December 1893).

According to his Parchment Certificate of Discharge

discharged in consequence of the termination of his first period of limited engagement.
Service in Reserve to this date: 5 years 259 days.

Wednesday 14 November 1888: Alexander Osborne: Discharge confirmed
According to Alexander Osborne’s Parchment Certificate of Discharge, signed on signed on 14 November 1888, he had his
Discharge confirmed at Horse Guards, London.

My Mum’s paternal grandparents John Paine and Mary Ann Preece were married on 22 October 1890, according to their Marriage Certificate.

Monday 4 December 1893: Louisa Osborne born
My Dad’s mother Louisa Osborne (surprisingly named “Lucy” in the 1901 Census) was born on 4 December 1893, according to her Death Certificate.

Monday 30 July 1894: Edith Mary Paine born
Edith Mary Paine, my Mum’s aunt (her father’s sister), was born on 30 July 1894, according to her Birth Certificate.

Tuesday 2 August 1898: Edith Annie Hindley born
Edith Annie Paine née Hindley, my Mum’s mum, was born on “2nd August, 1898”, according to her Death Certificate.

Monday 29 May 1899: John Edward Paine born
My Mum’s father John Edward Paine was born on 29 May 1899, according to his Birth Certificate. His father was “John Paine” and his mother was “Mary Ann Paine formerly Preece”. Because there are photos of the Preece side of the family, one going back three generations, I assume that “formerly” means “née”.
