…I’d been writing a list of stuff to take with me, so consulting it I packed my cabin-luggage with some of the stuff and put other items of it in my pockets. So I was ready well before the some-minutes-early arrival of the taxi. We sat in the waiting room of the station till the sign said “Boarding”. That was the usual First TransPennine Express mendacity, because we found the doors of the train locked. I read some of Leaving Alexandria
[i] en route. Outside the Manchester Airport railway station we got a taxi to the Premier Inn, the familiar “Runger Lane South” one, not the nearby “Runger Lane North” one that we liked less than “Runger Lane South”. We arrived ca.5.50pm, checked in, and booked a table in the restaurant for 6pm, which gave us time to deposit our luggage in the room and go down again. Janet had a spinach and ricotta lasagne and I had a huge (perhaps 14") “New Yorker” pizza, with hot pepperoni and even hotter jalapeños. There were “two for the price of one” drinks at the bar, so I went and got myself two pints of Kronenbourg 1664 lager and Janet two Pepsi Diet. Then we returned to the room; Janet updated her journal and I updated this record.…
